Seasonal crews, remote sites, and a payroll that has to be right anyway
A mixture of casual and permanent staff, numbers that swing with the season, and people working where nobody is watching the gate. Every one of those makes attendance harder to capture and easier to argue about.
The cost of harvesting is the number that decides the season, and it is made almost entirely of hours. When those hours are collected on paper, entered by hand and reconciled afterwards, the figure arrives too late to do anything with — and carries whatever errors came with it.

- Clocks that cope with the conditions. Dust, wet hands, gloves and cold rooms all defeat a fingerprint reader sooner or later — contactless facial recognition does not care.

What it looks like on site
A terminal at the shed and the packing line, browser clocking for crews who start in the paddock, and one set of pay rules behind both. Supervisors approve the exceptions; nobody re-types a timesheet. At the end of the season the labour cost per block is a report, not a reconstruction.
